SPEAKER of the Slovak parliament Pavol Hrušovský is expecting MP changes in the chamber with “at least two, perhaps three” MPs joining the ruling New Citizen’s Alliance (ANO), he said to the Slovak daily SME on December 27.
These MPs will likely include some of the current independent MPs who are members of the People’s Union (ĽÚ) party and the ex-communist MP Herman Arvay. Arvay recently said that he considered ANO and the opposition Smer party to be close to him. But Vojtech Tkáč, head of the ĽÚ, said he knew of no plans among his party peers to leave the union.
Changes in the chamber may take place in relation to the MPs who left the Slovak Democratic and Christian party to form the Free Forum platform at the end of 2003. The Free Forum is expected to become a party in January and Robert Nemcsics, a former member of the ANO who is now an independent MP, might join the formation. Nemcsics, however, wants to wait and see the new party’s program before he decides on his next move.
The Slovak parliament has a total of 150 MPs. The ruling coalition currently has 68 MPs and the Free Forum is seven members strong.
