THE CHRISTIAN Democratic Movement (KDH) will nominate Pavol Hrušovský for the post of the new chair of the Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ), the SITA newswire reported on July 22. The candidacy of the failed presidential candidate, who recently left his post as the party’s caucus chairman, should be approved in August.
“The KDH has not officially discussed it,” KDH deputy chair Pavol Belinský told SITA.
Hrušovský might also get the support of the ruling Smer party. Its deputy chair, Renáta Zmajkovičová, said she will wait for the official nomination.
“Pavol Hrušovský managed to handle the post of parliamentary speaker; he has experience,” Zmajkovičová told SITA, adding that he would be an appropriate candidate.
She also stressed that when forming a government, Smer promised that the NKÚ top post will go to the opposition. Though there have already been several elections over the new chair, the party has not supported them.
The most recent KDH nominee for the NKÚ top post was prosecutor Maroš Žilinka, who had the support of several opposition parties. Smer, however, said they would not vote for him and did not support a public vote. The opposition parties Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), Most-Híd and the KDH subsequently withdrew the nomination in May 2013. Before him, the opposition nominated Kamil Krnáč and Vladimír Klimeš.
The tenure of current NKÚ head Ján Jasovský expired in February 2012.
