Pavol Hrušovsky, after earlier resigning as chairman of the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), was re-elected to the same post at a special party congress in Trnava on July 22.
Hrušovsky gained the support of 229 out of 299 delegates in the vote and will therefore lead the party until at least the next regular congress, which is set to take place next year and where a vote on all party leadership posts will take place.
"The KDH is entering a very difficult and complex period as an opposition party ... and with respect to this, the legitimacy of the party leader and party decisions not being challenged are the most important things," Hrusovsky told reporters after the vote.
Hrušovsky said that he stepped down as KDH leader earlier at the Congress because he was aware of his personal and political responsibilities towards KDH after the June 17 general election.
Hrušovsky had come under criticism following the party's disappointing election result (8.31 percent of the vote) and the decision to offer talks aimed at forming a new governing coalition with the election winner - Smer-SD.
