Speaker of Parliament Pavol Hrušovský announced that he would like to meet Prime Minister Iveta Radičová to discuss the freezing the salaries of constitutional representatives, other than judges, in 2012, the TASR newswire reported.
At the moment, these public officials’ salaries depend on the state deficit, based on a model prepared by the Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party. Hrušovský, who considers the model unsuitable, wants to propose a measure that would be voted on by MPs at a December parliamentary session in fast-tracked legislative proceedings so that it might come into effect as of January 1, 2012.
“The calculation is extremely complicated, almost unusable for the salary of an MP,” Hrušovský said, as quoted by TASR. “I cannot calculate my own salary according to this at all.”
He added that it would be unfair if MPs’ salaries grew by 18.8 percent at a time when the economic situation for many people in Slovakia is getting worse. He believes that a bill to freeze salaries will pass parliament.
