PAVOL Hrušovský has officially entered the presidential race as the candidate of his party, the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH).

The KDH Council voted at its session on Saturday, October 12, to support Hrušovský as its presidential candidate, with 75 out of 91 votes of all KDH members present at the session.

The KDH supports Hrušovský along with another opposition party, Most-Híd.

Hrušovský earlier conditioned his candidacy with the support of all three parties gathered within the Peoples Platform, but the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) has yet to declare its support for Hrušovský, and information from within the party indicates that its members are divided over the issue.

SDKÚ head Pavol Frešo stated earlier this week that his party will decide which presidential candidate to endorse based on the resolution approved by the party Presidium in late November or early December after the results of the upcoming regional and local elections are known, the TASR newswire reported.

Hrušovský believes he can succeed in the 2014 presidential election.

"If I wasn't sure, I wouldn't have accepted the offer to stand as a candidate," he said on October 12, as quoted by TASR, adding that he's still hoping for SDKÚ's support, but he understands that the party wants to arrive at a final decision after the regional elections in mid-November.

In addition, the council at the same time acknowledged the presidential candidacy of its founder Ján Čarnogurský, who announced before the council session, on October 11, that he was giving up his membership in the party so as to grant KDH's council freedom of choice as far as the selection of its presidential candidate, TASR wrote.

The list of presidential candidates so far also includes KDH defector and independent MP Radoslav Procházka, former businessman and philanthropist Andrej Kiska, Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) MP Peter Osuský as well as several less known civic candidates. The governing Smer is expected to unveil its candidate later this year.
