Hungarian Foreign Affairs Minister Péter Balázs summoned Slovakia's Ambassador to Hungary, Peter Weiss, on Monday, August 24 and at the meeting expressed his “deep written and verbal” disagreement with the recent incident in which Slovakia denied Hungarian President Lázsló Sólyom entry to the country, the SITA newswire reported.
The Hungarian minister called the issue “unprecedented and unacceptable”, according to the official statement of the Hungarian diplomat. Hungary now expects the Slovak government to explain the incident.
Balázs disagrees with the arguments made by the Slovak government for its denial of entry to the Hungarian president. Slovakia referred to directives of the European Parliament and the European Council, spelling out restrictions on free movement of dangerous persons. These can be applied only under strict conditions and should not be used to prevent representatives of states from moving freely, claims the minister.
The Hungarian minister accused Slovakia of taking illicit steps and Hungary will send a representative of its foreign affairs department, József Czukor, to Bratislava on August 27. The Hungarian foreign minister and his Slovak counterpart, Miroslav Lajčák, are expected to talk about this issue on Sunday, August 30 at an international conference to be held in Slovenian city of Bled, SITA wrote.
