AN INDEPENDENT agency will assess the election result of the opposition Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) in the June 17 parliamentary elections, said party leader Vladimír Mečiar.
The one-time strongest party in Slovakia scored a surprisingly low 8.79 percent in the vote.
Mečiar admitted that his party must have made a mistake somewhere, but insists that the party's potential as a coalition partner has been improving.
The HZDS twice won the most votes in general elections in 2002 and 1998, but was unable to form a coalition government because the other parties refused to join it.
Mečiar also rejected the idea of his leaving his post to help his party become more acceptable to its political partners, as officials from the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) called on him to do recently.
According to Mečiar, such idea is absurd and "out of the question", the SITA news agency wrote.
