THE MOVEMENT for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) has submitted a proposal to recall Finance Minister Ivan Mikloš. Six deputies of the Slovak Communist Party also signed the proposal for the no-confidence motion, the daily SME wrote.
The HZDS wants to have Mikloš, the mastermind of the government's economic policies, sacked for what it calls the unbearably tough social reforms that have heavily hit the socially weak.
The opposition does not have a guarantee that it has the necessary votes to recall Mikloš. However, HZDS officials declared that they have the promised support of 76 deputies, which would be enough to oust the finance minister.
Free Forum leader Ivan Šimko says that there "are serious reasons" for sacking the finance minister, but he does not trust the HZDS move, as he interprets it as part of HZDS leader Vladimír Mečiar's presidential election campaign.
