MPs from the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), one of the ruling coalition parties, will not take part in an extraordinary parliamentary session due to take place on Wednesday, May 12, to debate the EU's financial rescue package for Greece, according to the party's vice-chairman for the economy, Jozef Habánik.
Speaking to journalists in Bratislava on Tuesday, Habánik said that once Slovakia had decided to adopt the euro, it was obliged to back the idea of taking any measure necessary to ensure the stability of the common European currency. He said that his party views the opposition parties' statements vis-a-vis Greece's financial troubles and a possible loan to be provided by Slovakia as a sign of "pure populism and demagogy churned up now, before the election".
Habánik told the TASR newswire that the HZDS fully supports the statements made by Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer) and the government, which has given a mandate to Finance Minister Ján Počiatek to act in international forums. In line with Fico's opinion, the HZDS said that only the new parliament (created after the June 12 general election) should decide whether to provide a rescue loan to Greece or not.
