The joint candidate of Smer, the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ-DS) and the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) for the post of Nitra Regional governor is running as an independent candidate, the incumbent office holder, Milan Belica, announced on September 22, as reported by the TASR newswire.
Belica didn't rule out the possibility that he could be supported by other political parties as well, adding that some have already announced their support. The Movement for Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) – currently the fourth member of the regional election coalition in Nitra - will not be among them as it wants to support its own candidate. Belica is a former HZDS member who left the party in January 2009.
Tibor Glenda (Smer), Tomáš Galbavý (SDKÚ) and Pavol Abrhán (KDH) agreed that it would be ideal if the coalition formed for the election of deputies to the regional parliament were identical to the one set up for the election of governor. "Alas, we won't succeed in this, but it isn't our fault," they stated for TASR. TASR
