Employment in industry in Slovakia shrank 13.3 percent y-o-y in March, the Slovak Statistics Office informed the SITA newswire. The number of employees fell also in the wholesale sector by 23 percent, in restaurants and pubs by 19.4 percent, in sales and repairs of motor vehicles by 10 percent, in accommodation services by 7.5 percent, in selected market services by 4.7 percent and in the retail business by 2.2 percent.
Employment went up 5.1 percent y-o-y in construction, 3.9 percent in postal services, information and communication and 2 percent in transport. In the first quarter of this year, 534,600 people worked in industry, of which 483,700 were in industrial manufacturing.
The construction sector reported a labor force of 183,300 people, the retail sector of 157,600 people, selected market services of 126,200 people, and wholesale of 108,400 people. 97,700 people worked in transport, 55,700 in postal services, information and communications, 32,900 in restaurants and pubs, 23,800 in car sales and repairs, and 10,700 in accommodation.
