THE INDUSTRIAL Production Index (IPI) increased by 5.9 percent year-on-year in March, the Statistics Office announced on May 12, as reported by the TASR newswire.

The overall result was largely due to increases in manufacturing by 7.7 percent y/y; mining and quarrying by 2.6 percent; the production of transport vehicles by 8.1 percent; production of electronic devices by 35.7 percent; production of metals and metal structures apart from machines and equipment by 12.4 percent; production of goods made from rubber, plastic and other non-metallic mineral materials by 12.7 percent; and in other production and in the repair and installation of machinery and equipment by 21.7 percent.

Conversely, production volumes fell in textiles, clothing, leather and related products by 19.1 percent, and in the production of coke and refined petroleum products by 17.1 percent.

With seasonal effects taken into account, industrial production grew by 0.2 percent month-on-month in March.

Over the first three months of 2014, the IPI increased by 9.2 percent year-on-year, which was mainly influenced by an increase in manufacturing - 11.5 percent; and by reductions in electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supplies - 3 percent, and in mining and quarrying - 0.2 percent.
