The rise was driven by foreign investors such as electronics maker Sony and auto producer Volkswagen Slovakia.

VW produced 171,000 cars in the first nine months of 2002 for output of Sk77 billion ($1.8 billion), an 11 per cent rise on the same period in 2001. The firm employed 8,767 people at the end of September, 1,295 more than a year ago.
