The Slovak state has signed the European Agreement about inland waterways of international importance. Part of the plan is to build a canal that would connect the Váh River to the Odra River and on to the Baltic Sea. The plan may mean the demolition of about one-third of the northern-Slovak town of Kysucké Nové Mesto, the daily Sme wrote on its website on March 17.
The canal will have an impact also on the close villages of Dunajov, Krásno nad Kysucou, Čierne, Skalité and the town of Čadca. The Mayor of Kysucké Nové Mesto Ján Hartel was shocked and said that demolition of the town is unacceptable. The construction of the canal should start in 2025 and it should cost more than €1 billion.
The project is a part of the Vážka vosná cesta (River Váh Waterway) that would be gradually connected through the Czech Republic to the Odra River. The problem surfaced only recently when a developer who intended to build 600 apartments found out that this may not possible due to the future plans. Sme
