Banks have refused to introduce more stringent security measures, said Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák on May 10, in referring to a bank robbery in Malacky, near Bratislava, in which a security guard was killed, the TASR newswire wrote.
“We offered to install some monitoring devices for free, but unfortunately it doesn't seem as if banks are interested in improving their own security,” said Kaliňák.
Kaliňák added that the ministry cannot force owners of private property to enhance security on their premises if they do not want to do so. According to the Interior Minister, banks rejected the offer because robberies do not take place often and most banks are insured.
The security guard in Malacky was rushed to hospital in a critical condition and died during an emergency operation. During the robbery, he sustained three gunshot wounds to the face, chest, and abdominal area.
About one hour after the shoot-out, a suspect was detained in a hospital in Trnava region, being treated for gunshot wounds, said the Bratislava head of police, Pavel Brath, as quoted by the topky.sk website. Other suspected accomplices were detained as well, but no official information has been confirmed yet.
