Interior Minister Daniel Lipšic has been asked to inform Slovakia’s parliament about alleged eavesdropping on MPs at a session later this month, MPs in the Constitutional Committee from coalition and opposition parties agreed at a meeting on March 21, the TASR newswire reported.
The exact date of Lipsic's appearance has not been set yet, committee vice-chair Edita Pfundtner told TASR. The proposal was offered by opposition Smer MP Jana Laššáková. She was backed by her party colleague Miroslav Číž who complained about receiving information on the issue from the media.
"It's a serious affair and I need authentic information from the minister," said Číž.
SDKÚ MP Jana Dubovcová pointed out that if Lipšic appears before the committee he might not disclose everything as some information may be confidential. Opposition SNS MP Igor Štefanov last week convened a press conference at which he claimed, without citing sources, that 40 MPs from both coalition and opposition parties are being wiretapped, adding that Lipšic is aware of this. Štefanov refused to provide any names.
The Interior Minister responded that Štefanov, who is likely to face a motion aimed at stripping him of his parliamentary immunity for his involvement in the improper bulletin-board tender, is a drowning man clutching at a straw, TASR wrote.
