Interior Ministry spokesman Erik Tomáš said Saturday that police and prosecutorshave acted properly in the case of ethnic-Hungarian university student Hedviga Malinová. Malinová, who reported last August that she had been beaten up for speaking Hungarian in public by two youths in Nitra, now faces charges of providing false testimony after the police decided she had invented the entire incident.
Tomáš spoke following an earlier statement by the Fair-Play Alliance and 11 prominent people who expressed doubts that the Slovak law-enforcement agencies had acted in an impartial manner in the case. The Fair-Play Alliance claimed that media have uncovered information about potential errors in the investigation that could prevent the truth from coming to light.
Tomáš said the ministry respects all opinions in the matter but added that announcements coming before a legal decision has been reached are of no help. Neither the police, nor the prosecutor's office has reacted to the charges by the Fair-Play Alliance.
