The Interior Ministry has decided not to send any material humanitarian aid to the Horn of Africa at this time, even though the area is currently plagued by drought and famine. The adverse conditions there are aggravated by local political upheavals which make access to the affected areas difficult.
Representatives of the Interior and Foreign Affairs Ministries announced the decision at their co-ordination meeting held on Wednesday, July 20.
"The Interior Ministry has decided to rely on the services of established NGOs active in this field - the Slovak Catholic Charity, Magna - Children in Need and People in Peril, and allocate only financial resources via the mechanisms of the Foreign Affairs Ministry," said Ľudmila Stanová of the Interior Ministry press department, as quoted by the TASR newswire. During the session ministries promised to monitor the situation in the Horn of Africa, and stand ready to provide humanitarian aid to refugee camps in affected areas in case of emergency.
