THE INTERNATIONAL Press Institute (IPI) has criticised President Rudolf Schuster for suing journalist Aleš Krátký under a communist-era law for an editorial Krátký wrote about the president's state of the nation address in 2001.
The IPI wrote in its regular report on the state of media freedom around the world that the Krátký case was the most serious breach of freedom of the press in Slovakia last year.
The IPI was also critical of the country's politicians who, according to the report, are unable to tolerate criticism from the media.
At the same time the IPI was critical of the cabinet for failing to support a coalition member of parliament, Tomáš Galbavý, who had proposed that the obsolete law which allowed Schuster to sue Krátký for defamation of a top state official be extirpated from Slovak legislation.
