ON THE EVE of the NATO summit in Istanbul, Slovak Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda stated that it was in the interest of the democratic world to contribute to positive change in Iraq.
He underscored that the democratic world had a duty to help Iraq, one from which Slovakia would not shy away. He added that bringing security to Iraq was a new challenge and a new chance for the country, the region, and for Slovakia.
President Ivan Gašparovič, who leads the Slovak delegation to Istanbul, supports this opinion. However, the continued participation of the Slovak mine-clearing unit in Iraq, of which three recently died in a mortar attack, will depend on parliament.
