DURING manipulation with chemicals, there was an accident on August 18 in the former engine hall of the nuclear power plant in Jaslovské Bohunice (Trnava Region). A casing was damaged while two employees working there were injured.
“Two employees were treated and one was hospitalised,” Agáta Staneková, the spokeswoman for the Nuclear and Decommissioning Compamy (JAVYS) told TASR newswire. She added that JAVYS management strictly refuses any notion about an explosion in the plant.
“This was an accident at work, and no radiation accident,” she said. “It happened in the building of the former power plant.”
The circumstances are now being investigated. “The workers were duly instructed and equipped with tools necessary for manipulating this type of material; JAVYS abided by all the safety instructions.” Staneková added.
The injured men are hospitalised in the Teaching Hospital in Trnava. Hospital spokesman Matúš Stračiak told TASR that one patient was hospitalised for acid burns of eyes, while the other one is stabilised, his life is not threatened anymore and is examined for potential respiratory problems.
JAVYS is a company decommissioning the nuclear power plants A1 and V1 in Jaslovské Bohunice, the SITA newswire wrote. It is a joint-stock company whose 100-percent owner is the Slovak state, which also executes the shareholder’s rights through the Economy Ministry. Apart from the decommissioning the A1 and V1 plants, JAVYS also offers nuclear services in disposing of the burnt nuclear fuel and radioactive waste.
