Jobless rate fell slightly month-on-month in May

The unemployment rate dropped by 0.15 percentage points between April and May, to reach 14.26 percent, Marián Valentovič, the head of the Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Centre (ÚPSVaR) told a press conference on Thursday, June 20.

"The total number of jobseekers available for work reached 384,977 in May, which constitutes a drop of 1 percent, or close to 4,000 people when compared to figures for the previous month, when the number reached 388,948," said Valentovič, as quoted by the TASR newswire. A drop was seen in all eight Slovak regions. At district level, 59 districts recorded a month-on-month fall in May, while 19 districts saw rises in unemployment. Nearly 29,000 people were removed from the list of jobseekers in May, mainly thanks to them securing work.

The total number of unemployed, including people on sick leave or in postgraduate internships, was 415,400 at the end of May. In month-on-month terms this was a decrease of 6,700 people, the SITA newswire wrote. The unemployment rate, calculated from the overall number of unemployed in May fell by 0.25 percentage points from the previous month to 15.39 percent. Compared to May 2012, however, it increased by 0.87 percentage points.
