A SLOVAK judge has been awarded a Transparency International Integrity Award for fighting corruption.

Jana Dubovcová, one of 20 nominees for the award, is the head of the Banská Bystrica district court, and is a well known justice who caused a stir last year by carrying out a corruption survey among patrons of her own court. The survey found that one-third of respondents had offered a judge a bribe.

Dubovcová said that when launching her survey she had not thought she was doing anything special. In repeated surveys, Slovak respondents have said they regard the judicial system as among the most corrupt areas in the country.

Emília Sičáková-Beblavá from Transparency International Slovakia said that the judge would be officially awarded the price on October 11 in Casablanca, Morocco.
