The criminal immunity of judges looks set to be scrapped by the end of 2012, with Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška having already broached the issue with judges, governing Smer party caucus head Jana Laššáková said after a session of a parliamentary all-party panel on Wednesday, October 10.
"The judges have not proved willing to see their immunity curbed, however," Laššáková said as quoted by the TASR newswire. "I'm disappointed about this... I believe that after MPs accepted public demands to scrap their immunity, judges should also show some empathy."
If the required change to the constitution is passed, police won't have to ask the Constitutional Court for permission to initiate a prosecution against a judge.
