Judge's salaries will not enjoy valorisation next year, Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška announced after talks with representatives of the judiciary on Tuesday, November 20. This means that judges will share the same fate – a pay freeze – as other state officials: lawmakers, ministers and the president.
Paška explained that the government will pass a proposal to freeze the salaries of public officials as early as tomorrow (Wednesday, November 21), and then pursue the approval of this legislation in parliament in a fast-tracked proceeding. Furthermore, judges will also see their criminal immunity reduced, the TASR newswire wrote.
The Sme daily wrote in its Wednesday’s, November 21, issue that judges, however, agree with downsizing their salaries for a year and a half on the condition that the money saved will be used to improve the conditions of judicial clerks. In February, parliament should initiate a discussion about curbing the penal responsibility of judges who have not approved it yet, however.
