The Judicial Council passed a proposal submitted by Supreme Court Chairman Štefan Harabin on June 15 to temporarily assign Justice Minister Viera Petríková and Justice Ministry State Secretary Daniel Hudák to the Supreme Court, Judicial Council spokesman and member Juraj Sopoliga announced, the TASR newswire reported.
According to the proposal, the one-year secondment will take place from July 1, 2010, to June 30, 2011. Petríková and Hudák both met the criteria required for the temporary assignment. Sopoliga said he "could not recall" exactly how many council members voted in favour of the proposal, but "no one harboured any objections".
"A temporary assignment is a standard procedure if a judge is to gain experience with other types of courts. After its completion, it will be decided whether or not they stand a chance of being assigned to a higher court," said Sopoliga. It is not certain that Petríková will be permanently assigned to the Supreme Court, as she has to pass a selection procedure. Before her 2009-2010 tenure as justice minister Petríková served as a district court chair, while Hudák was a regional court judge.
