JUSTICE Minister Štefan Harabin has frozen annual end-of-year bonuses for the justices and other staff working at the Special Court for organized crime cases, which he intends to close as of April next year.
The Special Court, which Harabin has campaigned against since taking office in July, will thus be the only court in Slovakia that will not receive a single crown in end-year bonuses. The Justice Ministry argues that the pay of Special Court justices, whose average wage is Sk170,000 per month, is high enough not to warrant extra. District court justices in the regular court system, for instance, earn Sk45,000 per month.
The chief justice of the Special Court, Igor Králik, said he had been informed of the minister’s decision, but declined to comment on it.
