JUSTICE Minister Štefan Harabin has proposed in a draft bill which he submitted for interdepartmental review on Wednesday to shut down the Special Court and the Special Attorney General’s Office as of April 1, 2007.
At the same time, the bill strengthens the position of the current special attorney general who will become the right hand of the general prosecutor and will gain more powers.
The justice minister says he wants to strengthen the fight against corruption by strengthening the position of the special prosecutor, specialized police teams and a series of other laws.
Critics, however, say that by closing down the Special Court, Harabin is doing the opposite.
It is not clear, however, whether the government will approve Harabin's proposal as he submitted it without prior consultation of the coalition partners. PM Robert Fico did not say whether or not he would support Harabin’s proposal.
