Justice Minister Lucia Žitňanská from the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) plans to change the way in which judges are selected by introducing open competition, the TASR newswire learned from Eva Dukátová of the Justice Ministry press department on Monday, July 19.
According to Dukátová, the first thing that the new minister plans to do is to abolish the selection process for judges' posts. By this decision, Žitňanská hopes to put a stop to previous ways in which judges' posts are assigned and create conditions in which the best candidates can succeed regardless of who the justice minister happens to be.
The minister said it is imperative to insist on open competition in the public eye to prevent manipulation and dubious practices, adding that these changes will contribute towards a more efficient judiciary and faster court proceedings.
