The Justice Ministry welcomes endeavours by Lucia Žitňanská of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union, SDKU “to remedy mistakes that were made in the judiciary up until 2006, but the solutions proposed fail to strengthen democracy in the judiciary and instead weaken the enforceability of the law and provide scope for ‘mistakes’ made by judges that sometimes result in releasing people charged with murder,” said ministry spokesman Michal Jurči on October 12, the TASR newswire reported.
Opposition SDKU party MP Lucia Žitňanská said earlier in the day that she will submit a series of proposals at a session of the Parliament’s constitutional committee on October 13, with the initiative aimed at ensuring that disciplinary proceedings in the judiciary won’t be misused.
“The main point is to open up the courts and the judicial system as such to civil public scrutiny,” Žitňanská said.
According to Jurči, the ministry is wondering why Žitňanská didn’t come up with the proposals when former justice minister Daniel Lipšic brought forth numerous proposals for disciplinary proceedings against judges.
“MP Žitňanská wants to change the disciplinary system without providing proof on alleged misuses of disciplinary proceedings against judges,” Jurči said. TASR
