Former interior minister Robert Kaliňák (Smer) is ready to undergo a lie detector test with respect to the case of Hedviga Žáková, née Malinová, who is reported to be suing him for libel after he called her a compulsive liar in a recent newspaper interview.
Kaliňák told the TASR newswire on Thursday, May 26, that he is also ready to testify in court and speak about all the circumstances and details of the case. "But I doubt whether the other side will do the same thing," he said, adding that he insists on the veracity of everything he said in the interview. Hungarian-language daily Új Szó reported on Thursday that Malinová, the alleged victim of an attack by two unknown men in Nitra in 2006 for speaking Hungarian on her mobile phone, has filed a lawsuit against Kaliňák.
The case dates back to August 2006, when Malinová was a student in Nitra. She alleged that she was attacked, and pictures of her severely bruised face and body appeared in the media. However, the investigation into the case was dropped shortly afterwards, and Kaliňák, who was then interior minister, publicly asserted that no attack had taken place and that Malinová had made the whole story up. Malinová was then accused of making a false statement – a charge which remains valid, although no case against her has ever been presented before a court.
