A PROPOSAL to make tiny Democratic Party (DS) leader Ľudovít Kaník head of the Labour Ministry has run into opposition from some parties forming the next cabinet, as it would add yet another faction to the four-member coalition.
Kaník has been put forward by Mikuláš Dzurinda's SDKÚ party, apparently in return for having withdrawn the DS from elections shortly before the September 20-21 ballot and thrown his support behind Dzurinda.
In the elections the SDKÚ did far better than expected, placing second with over 15 per cent of the vote and becoming the strongest of four right-wing parties with a mandate to form the next government.
However, members of the other parties in cabinet talks have said that bringing Kaník into government would be tantamount to adding his DS party to the four-member ruling coalition.
