IT SEEMS that Slovakia is set for early elections. After opposition and independent deputies blocked by refusing to present themselves to parliament on parliament on September 12, the Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) and the Christian Democratic Party (KDH) started to discuss having early elections at the soonest possible date, the daily SME reported.
The Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) still thinks there is a way for the ruling coalition to survive until the end of the electoral term.
SMK chairman Béla Bugár said his party is willing to support a legislation to cut the electoral term to force early elections.
President Ivan Gašparovič also feels that early elections would be the "most ideal solution." He would also welcome the fact that he would not have to approve the appointment of Jirko Malchárek as economy minister.
The coalition found itself in crisis after Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda called on the president to recall New Citizens Alliance (ANO) leader Pavol Rusko as economy minister due to suspected abuse of power.
Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament Pavol Hrušovský requested that opposition leaders start talks to find a solution to the current parliamentary crisis.
The Slovak Communist party (KSS) is asking Dzurinda to resign unless he submits a proposal to resolve the current “government and parliamentary crisis”.
