THE CABINET failed to reach a resolution on the sale of the remaining plots of land for the KIA car plant near Žilina at a meeting April 6, the Pravda daily reported. A decision has again been postponed.
Despite the fact that the construction of the plant has already been delayed, some cabinet minister are refusing to support the proposal of Economy Minister Pavol Rusko what wants to give the remaining plot owners more money for their land.
Rusko says that there are businessmen who are willing to pay the landowners Sk350 (€9) per square meter. The government was offering just Sk140 (€3.5). According to the proposal, the businessmen would buy the plots from the owners, and then exchange these for other plots that are administered by the national land fund (SPF).
Justice Minister Daniel Lipšic argues, however, that expropriation of the land would be a better way of solving the problem. He has proposed a legal revision to the expropriation process that should simplify it. However, even if approved, the change would not take effect before the summer.
