The output of the Kia Motors Slovakia plant in Teplička nad Váhom increased by 6 percent year-on-year to 158,900 cars in the first half of 2013, Kia Motors Slovakia spokesman Jozef Bačé said at a press conference on Thursday, July 18.
Production of the Kia Sportage model made up 48 percent of the overall output, with the rest being represented by the cee'd (42 percent) and Venga (10 percent) models, the TASR newswire wrote. The highest numbers of cars were exported to Russia (24 percent), the United Kingdom (14 percent), Germany (9 percent), and France and Italy (5 percent each). Less than 1 percent of the cars made were sold in Slovakia. The plant made 253,200 engines (133,100 petrol and 120,100 diesel), with 47 percent of production destined for affiliate brand Hyundai, which has a vehicle production plant in the neighbouring Czech Republic.
Kia Motors Slovakia is the Korean carmaker's first plant in Europe. It was built between 2004 and 2006, with production launched in December 2006. The plant currently employs around 3,900 people.
