CHILDREN placed in reform schools suffer from hunger, Ombudswoman Jana Dubovcová claims. To demonstrate that the state financing of food for children in these facilities is insufficient, she brought a sample of the daily menu to the MPs of the parliamentary committee for education.
“Food cannot be used as a tool for education,” the ombudswoman told the MPs, as quoted by the Sme daily.
In all facilities that Dubovcová visited children claimed they were hungry, she told Sme. The directors of several such facilities confirmed this for the daily.
The state currently pays €2.43 to €2.87 for children aged 11-15 years, while the daily allowance for youth aged 15-19 is between €2.58 and €3.01. With this amount, the facilities should secure breakfast, lunch, a morning and afternoon snack, dinner and late dinner for the inmates.
The ombudswoman is now demanding the allowance to be raised by €1, Sme reported.
