Alleged Taliban member Lambar Chan, who killed one Slovak soldier and injured two more in a July 9 at the Kandahar airbase, has escaped custody and is now hiding in the territory controlled by the Taliban movement.
The Sme daily wrote in its Wednesday, July 31, issue that in spite of this, he is not on the list of the most wanted terrorists. Slovakia has not yet offered financial reward for his capture. Prime Minister Robert Fico announced last week that there was a video recording of Chan celebrating after the Kandahar attack, and thus lethal force should be used by Slovak soldiers in future similar situations.
The Defence Ministry says that after the investigation is closed they will take steps in cooperation with other departments to include the killer on the wanted terrorists list. The Slovak soldier who suffered a serious chest wound in the Kandahar attack has been transferred from the U.S. military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, to the Central Military Hospital in Slovakia. The second seriously injured soldier, wounded in his head, will have to remain in the care of U.S. military doctors. His condition is stable, but the doctors still don't recommend he be transferred home.
