Slovak President Andrej Kiska left for a nine-day visit to the US on September 23, including a participation in the 69th session of the UN General Assembly in New York on the same day.
During his trip, he is to give the address at the UN session, meet UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and have several bilateral meetings with his counterparts. An important part of his trip should be active economic-investment promotion of Slovakia, support of innovative potential of Slovak companies, especially start-ups, and seeking the specific opportunities for collaboration and transfer of best experience between Slovakia and the US, the TASR newswire wrote.
The main topics of Kiska’s Thursday (September 25) address are the situation in Ukraine and the role the UN should play. Kiska is accompanied by Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák.
Kiska confirmed for TASR that he will appoint Daniela Švecová as the chairperson of the Supreme Court immediately after he returns from his so far longest trip in his term. He added that he welcomes changes in the top judicial positions, the victory of Švecová and also election of Jana Bajánková for the chairperson of the Judicial Council. Kiska opined that they are now facing a lot of work, but added he would do everything he can as president to help them return trust in the judiciary.
As for the judges running for the posts of Constitutional Court justices, whom he refused to appoint, Kiska commented, as quoted by TASR, that he is convinced he acted in compliance with the Constitution.
On September 16, first Jana Bajánková was elected to lead the Judicial Council which then elected Daniela Švecová for the Supreme Court chairperson to succeed Štefan Harabin in both posts. Harabin’s term expired in spring 2014 and in May. He failed in his re-election bids.
