PRESIDENT Andrej Kiska is likely to meet with Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška after the summer break to discuss the situation at the Constitutional Court, where two judges’ positions are still vacant after Kiska rejected five of the six candidates elected by parliament.
The date of the meeting has not been set yet, and it is likely to happen only after the summer break. The president wants to discuss other topics with the speaker too, he told journalists on his way from his official visit to Poland on July 15, as reported by the SITA newswire.
The Constitutional Court has been functioning with only 11 judges after Kiska announced on July 2 his decision to appoint only one of three judges for the three vacant chairs. He argued that among the five rejected candidates, he found no “long-standing interest in constitutional law and constitutional judiciary” in them, nor “sufficient specialised qualifications”, as quoted by the TASR newswire. Kiska called on parliament to elect four more candidates for the remaining two posts.
Paška has, however, not been inclined to such a solution, and it remains unclear when or if an election of new candidates will take place.
