The Jewish Community of Komárno in Nitra region organised celebrations of the 10th European Day of Jewish Culture on Sunday, September 6, as part of Europe-wide events in more than thirty countries, the TASR newswire reported.
Events were also held in Bratislava, Bardejov, and Nitra. According to Tomáš Paszternak, who organised the event in Slovak towns and cities, some 250 visitors attended the proceedings in Komárno where the introductory programme was followed by a kosher luncheon with culinary specialities at the cultural and social centre Menház.
At the local synagogue, the Kehila award – in recognition of work on behalf of Holocaust survivors – was presented to Gabriela Mancerová, head of the social and medical centre at the Central Union of Jewish Religious Communities. History teachers László Bero and József Blasko and regional historian František Budo, among others, received the Kehila Haver for their educational activity about Jewry and historical developments.
