Košice Airport handled almost 89,000 passengers in the first half of 2012, a decline of 11 percent from the previous year, the TASR newswire was told by the airport's deputy finance director Tomáš Jančuš on Wednesday, August 15. A similar decline (12 percent) was recorded by the country's largest airport in Bratislava.
Apart from charter flights and flights to summer holiday resorts, Košice Airport runs 45 regular flights weekly, including four times a day to Prague, and two each daily to Vienna and Bratislava. It also has a terminal for private flights. In addition, the airport deals with direct weekly flights to Croatia’s Rijeka in the summer, along with other summer destinations like Antalya in Turkey and Burgas, Bulgaria. Among the regular routes, the most positive developments have been seen in the Košice-Vienna link. The airport is currently holding talks with several carriers about introducing regular links to the British Isles and Germany.
"Launching new routes isn't only a task for the airport. There's a need for other entities that would benefit from reviving air transport to take part as well, namely the city, region, Košice Turizmus, European Culture Capital 2013 and other businesses," said Jančuš for TASR.
