Košice Airport reports 14-percent growth in passengers

KOŠICE Airport posted a year-on-year growth of 14 percent in the number of passengers in the first eight months of this year. From January to the end of August the airport served 184,390 people, while in the same period last year it was 161,507 passengers.

In the monitored period the airport registered 8,563 takeoffs and landings, up 1.6 percent year-on-year, the chairwoman of the airport’s board of directors, Marta Horváthová, announced.

The biggest year-on-year growth was in domestic flights, up 60.6 percent, with 37,580 passengers, the SITA news wire reported.

The highest number of passengers was however registered on international flights: 143,961, up 6.5 percent year-on-year. In the international sector, 87,292 people used regular flights and 56,669 flew on irregular connections. Other flights served 2,849 passengers.

Letisko Košice operated up to May 2004 as part of the Slovak Airport Administration. Now it is preparing for the entry of a strategic investor whose name should be known by the end of 2005.

The investor chosen in an international tender will gain 66 percent of the airport's shares.
