The head of the Interior Ministry's National Anti-Drug Unit, Igor Koš'tál, told the press on Monday several years ago Slovakia changed from a country which mainly served as a transit corridor to a target country. He added that 80 percent of Slovakia's illegal drug market is in the hands of Kosovo Albanians, who rushed to Slovakia in 1989 and managed to gain control over a better part of the market here.
The most popular drug is heroin. Second place belongs to marijuana, and cocaine is also is a hot commodity, he said.
Bratislava represents 60 percent of Slovakia's illegal drug market because the capital concentrates the most dealers and consumers. Koš'tál said that 109 drug dealers were detained this year alone. From this number, 40 were charged, 18 were being prosecuted and are in custody, and 30 are being prosecuted but are not detained. Typical bail for a top street dealer could be 200,000 crowns.
