Kováč's suit against Mečiar suspended

A Bratislava prosecutor on August 5 suspended Slovak President Michal Kováč's complaint against Prime Minister Vladimír Mečiar, stating that there was no suspicion of criminal activity, Pravda reported three days later. Kováč filed charges against Mečiar on May 28 for abuse of power, slander and defamation of a head of state for comments he made during a radio interview on May 24, when Mečiar accused the President of involvement in the $2.3 million fraud case surrounding the Slovak firm Technopol and of which his son is a suspect, of knowing about preparations for his son's kidnapping but failing to intervene, and of influencing the investigation of the Technopol case.
