ONE WEEK before former SIS chief Ivan Lexa, a Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) MP, was arrested in the Republic of South Africa (RSA), his party mate and former Interior Minister Gustáv Krajči travelled to the country and met with Slovakia's then most wanted man.
Interior Minister Ivan Šimko said he had trustworthy information that HZDS had kept in touch with Lexa during his illegal stay in South Africa.
Lexa is now in pre-trial custody and faces a list of charges including sabotage. Under his leadership the SIS allegedly plotted and carried out the kidnapping of former president Michal Kováč's son to Austria.
Krajči said he would explain the goal of his trip to South Africa later but the country's Police Force vice-vice president Jaroslav Spišiak said Krajči could not be punished for merely meeting Lexa. Consequences could be taken against Krajči only if it proved that he travelled to South Africa in order to help Lexa avoid criminal procedures.
