The Vysoká Škola Zdravotníctva a Sociálnej Práce sv. Alžbety (St. Elizabeth University of Health care and Social Work) in Eldoret, Kenya has not been damaged in the country’s recent unrest, its rector, Professor Vladimír Krčméry, told the media.
According to Krčméry, the convoy with humanitarian aid that Slovakia's Foreign Affairs Ministry sent to the victims of the violence has already arrived in Nairobi. A part of the aid will be sent to Eldoret, where Slovak missionary Martin Cingel operates. Along with Cingel, one employee of the university stayed in Eldoret.
"Two of our doctors are at a safe place, some 100 kilometres from Eldoret. The roads are blocked off, and it would be senseless to issue an order to retreat to Nairobi," said Krcmery.
He said that the organizations wants to leave such decisions up to the people on the ground in Kenya, as the organization is confident they can better assess the situation.
Eldoret was the site of bloody post-election violence, where dozens of people died when a fire broke out in a church.
"The situation is calm here now, but on Thursday, demonstrations are expected to be held again, so we don't know what will happen," Cingel said in a text message. Thousands have been killed in recent weeks in Kenya following an election result late last year whose validity has been contested. TASR
