A COIN called a called a zlatník (zlato means gold in Slovak) that was minted in Kremnica was sold at auction for €130,000.
“This is currently the most expensive coin from our territory but it does not mean, however, that it cannot be beat by some other coin,” Elizej Macho, co-owner of the Macho & Chlapovič auction house told the TASR newswire. He told TASR that the most expensive coin auctioned in the world was a twenty-dollar Double Eagle coin dating back to 1733 which sold for $8.5 million.
“The Slovak coin is, from our point of view, a modern one, minted by machine – so nothing particularly special,” Macho stated, as quoted by TASR.
“There were only 2,000 pieces of the Double Eagle minted and later the whole edition was melted down so there were only 14 pieces left and 12 of those are in public collections in museums”, the auctioneer said. “Two of them made it to the commercial market, probably not quite legally,” Macho conceded, adding that one was in the collection of an Egyptian king and the other one was sought by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation for about 40 years. “It was found a few years ago, went to official auction and sold for $8.5 million,” Macho told TASR.
