The Slovak Communist Party (KSS) is to choose its candidate for next year's presidential elections on August 2, the TASR newswire was told by KSS chairman Jozef Hrdlička on July 30.
Hrdlička said that the party won't support any of the candidates announced so far, and will select its own nominee for the presidential post. Regional party bodies support former KSS MP Vladimír Dado, along with Milan Sidor, who is independent. The central committee will also discuss representatives for next year's European Parliament elections. According to Hrdlička, the KSS will certainly take part in the European elections, and will put forward new faces.
The official presidential candidates so far are Iveta Radičová (SDKÚ-DS), Mission 21 chairman Ivan Šimko, former KSS MP and currently independent politician Dagmar Bollová, Július Kubík, and František Mikloško (KDS). Incumbent President Ivan Gašparovič has yet to announce his candidacy, but he is widely expected to stand for re-election. All candidates need to collect 15,000 signatures in order to take part in the election. TASR
