Slovakia's Foreign Affairs Minister Ján Kubiš notified his Austrian counterpart, Michael Spindelegger, on January 19 that Slovakia had secured sufficient gas supplies from the Yamal pipeline via the Czech Republic and that this has made restarting of the Jaslovske Bohunice nuclear plant unnecessary, at least for the time being, the TASR newswire wrote.
Due to the expected resumption of gas supplies from Russia via Ukraine this week, restarting the nuclear reactor is becoming less and less probable, Kubiš said to TASR, adding that Slovakia is still prepared to restart the reactor if it is necessary to do so. According to Kubiš's spokesman Jan Skoda, Spindelegger welcomed the news and praised Slovakia's neighbourly attitude towards Austria vis-a-vis the nuclear power plant.
