Kukan and Mečiar the most popular presidential candidates

FOREIGN Minister Eduard Kukan, the ruling Slovak Democratic and Christian Union candidate for Slovak president and Vladimir Mečiar, whom the opposition Movement for a Democratic Slovakia is sending to the April race, lead the presidential popularity chart this month, news wire SITA wrote.

A Focus agency poll says that Kukan would win the race with 27.5 percent of votes, followed by Mečiar with the support of 23.1 percent of those polled.

Incumbent President Rudolf Schuster was the choice of 17.5 percent of respondents.

Movement for Democracy leader Ivan Gašparovič would gain almost 14 percent of the vote. Former Slovak Ambassador to the United States Martin Bútora, head of the Bratislava regional government Ľubo Roman, and Christian Democrat František Mikloško would gain support ranging from 6.1 percent for Bútora to 4.7 percent for Mikloško.

The remaining five nominees for the top job would gain less than 1 percent each.
